Asbestos Exposure on Destroyers
What is a Destroyer Ship
Smaller than both battleships and cruisers, destroyers are built for speed and maneuverability. Designed as escorts and guard vehicles, a destroyer’s main function is to defend larger ships against quick and agile enemy attack vessels. With the decline of cruisers and total disuse of battleships in the U.S. Navy’s modern fleet, destroyers are the most heavily armed and armored surface-combat ships in common use. The U.S. Navy currently has 72 destroyers, including 10 under construction.
Destroyers built prior to the 1980s were constructed using asbestos in much of the equipment in the engine and boiler spaces, as well as in other parts of the ship. Veterans who served aboard these ships are therefore likely to have had some level of asbestos exposure, especially those tasked with operation, maintenance, and repair of asbestos parts and equipment. This exposure puts veterans at a high risk of developing mesothelioma, a devastating cancer whose only known cause is asbestos.
Veterans who served on U.S. Navy destroyers years ago and have now been diagnosed with mesothelioma may be entitled to compensation from the companies that sold dangerous asbestos products to the Navy. The experienced asbestos attorneys at Belluck & Fox LLP are nationally recognized for securing more than $800 million in compensation for asbestos victims and their families. Where Was Asbestos Used on U.S. Navy Destroyers?
Although the U.S. Navy issued a policy limiting the use of asbestos in its vessels in 1975, many veterans and civilian seamen had already been exposed to the dangerous carcinogen by that point. U.S. Navy destroyers constructed before the 1980s commonly contained asbestos in:
- Pumps, valves, boilers, and turbines
- Floor tiles and decking
- Plaster, cement, putty and caulk
- Insulation
- Gaskets and Packing
- Safety gear and insulated gloves
- Other equipment
Veterans who worked directly with or around these asbestos materials are at high risk of exposure, particularly because many of these servicemen worked in confined spaces below deck with poor ventilation. Even those veterans who did not work directly with asbestos on U.S. Navy destroyers were at risk of exposure in sleeping quarters, mess halls, and other common areas where asbestos may have been present.
History of U.S. Navy Destroyers
The need for destroyers arose from the devastating use of torpedo boats during the Chilean Civil War and the Sino-Japanese War, both in 1894. These torpedo boats were small and fast, able to quickly close in on bigger ships, launch their weapons, then zip away. Thus, the U.S. Navy began production of torpedo boat destroyers, which eventually became known as simply destroyers.
The USS Bainbridge (DD 1) was the first U.S. Navy destroyer launched (August 27, 1901). Throughout World War I, American destroyers evolved, with new classes introduced to bolster the strength of the U.S. Navy fleet. During this time, U.S. Navy destroyers fought in 250 battles with German submarines and provided for the safe trans-Atlantic passing of 2 million men. These “Greyhounds of the Sea,” as they were called, also laid the foundation for anti-submarine warfare and unveiled a future where ships could be used to combat airstrikes.
When World War I ended, the United States had amassed the largest fleet of destroyers in the world. However, more than 200 destroyers were decommissioned and 40 were scrapped as part of the Disarmament Treaty of 1922.
No new destroyers were launched from 1921 to 1934. Then came Adolf Hitler.
The U.S. Navy began building dozens of new destroyers in the late 1930s, initially transferring units to the Pacific Fleet. Although the U.S. didn’t join the war initially, it did build up an Atlantic Fleet of destroyers to combat threats from German submarines.
Throughout World War II, U.S. Navy destroyers played significant roles in destroying German submarines, rescuing airmen, and facilitating landings in North Africa and Europe. In particular, U.S. Navy destroyers are credited for their contributions to Operation Overlord, or the Battle of Normandy, on June 6, 1944.
Since the end of World War II, U.S. Navy destroyers have been called on to participate in the Korean War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam conflict.
The modern Navy destroyer USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) and its class have been bolstered by technological advances, all-steel construction, and a multitude of damage-control protections. The Navy has described it as “the most powerful surface combatant ever put to sea.”
Looking to the future, the USS Zumwalt and the Zumwalt-class destroyers are the Navy’s next generation of multi-mission surface combatants. Armed with advanced technology and survivability systems, these destroyers are tailored for land and sea attacks.
The Difference Between Destroyers and Frigates
Frigates, which used to be known as destroyer escorts, are smaller than full-size destroyers. They are used mainly for anti-aircraft and anti-submarine purposes, as well as to defend convoys. Frigates share the same design as destroyers but are not as fast.
Help for Veterans Who Are Diagnosed with Mesothelioma After Serving on U.S. Navy Destroyers
At Belluck & Fox, LLP, our nationally recognized asbestos lawyers have dedicated their careers to fighting for the rights of veterans who were exposed to asbestos on U.S. Navy ships. Our team has two decades of experience researching where asbestos was used on U.S. Navy destroyers and other vessels, and we are committed to fighting for full and fair compensation for service members who are now suffering from mesothelioma.
