Background
The Cancer Center of Northwestern University was established in 1974 and was later rededicated as the Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center upon an endowment from Ann and Robert H. Lurie in 1991. In 1998, due to its focus on patient care, basic and clinical research, prevention, education, outreach and training, the Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center achieved the comprehensive cancer center designation by the National Cancer Institute.
The Lurie Cancer Center is affiliated with four teaching hospitals in Chicago: Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, and the Jesse Brown Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center.
Lurie Cancer Center is one of the founding members of the NCI’s national network of designated hospitals and is one of only two NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the state of Illinois. Each year, Lurie Cancer Center receives over $140 million dollars in funding from the NCI and extramural resources combined and employs over 235 clinicians in cancer research in its 60,000-square-foot research facility. The U.S. News and World Report ranks Lurie Cancer Center as #27 nationally; and its affiliate, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, is ranked #1 in Illinois.
