David J. Sugarbaker, MDDr. Sugarbaker is one of the top mesothelioma experts in the country. As Director of the Texas Lung Institute at the Baylor College of Medicine and Chief of Thoracic Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, his research focuses on malignant pleural mesothelioma and non-small cell lung cancer.

Dr. Sugarbaker received his medical degree from Cornell University. He then completed a residency in surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, as well as residencies in thoracic surgery and cardiac surgery at Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Sugarbaker also completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Center, and a fellowship in surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Sugarbaker’s research pioneered multi-modal cancer treatment as a combination of surgery with chemotherapy as well as radiation therapy. His other research interests include lung volume reduction surgery, minimally invasive surgery and video-assisted thoracic surgery.

Dr. Sugarbaker is board certified in general surgery and thoracic surgery, and has been named one of Castle Connolly’s “America’s Top Doctors” since 2002. He has authored or co-authored over 260 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters about the treatment of mesothelioma and other forms of cancer.
