H. Richard Alexander, MDDr. Alexander is an internationally recognized surgical oncologist and clinical researcher who specializes in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers and mesothelioma. He is known for his development of innovative surgical techniques to treat patients with advanced gastrointestinal cancers and particularly those with diffuse liver or peritoneal metastases. In addition, Dr. Alexander is internationally recognized for his research and treatment of patients with malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.

Dr. Alexander came to the University of Maryland after spending 16 years at the National Cancer Institute, where he served as chief of the surgical metabolism section, chairman of the gastrointestinal malignancies section and deputy director of the NCI’s Center for Cancer Research. He received his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine, completed his residency in general surgery at the Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda and after serving as a medical officer in the United States Navy, he completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

He is the Associate Chair for clinical research and Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and currently serves as head of Surgical Oncology. Dr. Alexander has published more than 250 peer reviewed scientific articles, over 50 book chapters, and has lectured throughout the United States and in over 20 countries.
