Background
Dr. Roswell Park, a physician and professor of surgery at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine, founded the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in 1898. The establishment of Roswell Park Cancer Institute as an institute of treatment and cancer research was the first of its kind in the world. In 1904, the Institute initiated the first chemotherapy program world history.
Roswell Park Cancer Institute has been awarded status as a National Cancer Institute comprehensive center since 1974. To date, the hospital employs over 3,000 physicians, residents, nurses, and fellows and admits an estimated 4,500 patients for inpatient care and 168,000 for outpatient treatment.
The Roswell Park Cancer Institute carries a long tradition of cancer care and research excellence. As one of the nation’s leading cancer research and treatment centers, the Roswell Park Cancer Institute receives an estimated $36 million dollars each year to conduct oncological research from the National Cancer Institute.
